HCS should have policies in place to keep students and staff as safe as possible. This includes, at a minimum, the installation of floor locks to prevent an armed intruder from easy access into the classroom. Teachers should have accessible ways to account for students in the event of an emergency (like an app). I think Hartland can strengthen its safety protocols.
HCS should promote career prep and trades and recognize academic achievement as athletic accomplishments are celebrated. Curriculum should engage students and should prepare them to be responsible, involved citizens. Teachers must be supported with appropriate resources.
HCS administration must prioritize the education and safety of kids. Parents should be treated with respect and attention. Transparency and accountability are civic responsibilities of public schools. Hartland Schools can improve in this area--good communication is key!
Who am I? I'm a wife of 24 years, a mom of three amazing children and a teacher with 27 years of experience in public and private schools. My husband and I have two sons who are Hartland High School graduates and a daughter who is a freshman. Two German Shorthaired Pointer dogs round out our family. We are active parishioners of St. Pat's in Brighton and I am a member of the Hartland Lion's Club. I teach fifth grade math in a neighboring school district.
What's my Hartland experience? For several years, I was a stay-at-home mom and during that time, I was able to substitute teach at almost every school in the Hartland district (Round Elementary, Lakes Elementary, Creekside Elementary, Farms Intermediate School, and Hartland Middle School at Ore Creek). I have also had the privilege of volunteering in my children's classrooms. This includes class parties, one-on-one reading practice, spelling help, and teacher assistance like copying and laminating. Through these experiences, I have met many dedicated teachers and administrators who are committed to excellence in our students' education. My kids have been involved in various activities: Scouting; Encore Youth Theater; Bass Fishing; HAYAA sports; HCS Basketball, Baseball, Cross Country, and Track and Field; Optimist Club; and Class Council. Hartland has a lot to offer.
What are my priorities?
Why me? I know about schools as a parent and as a teacher. I have had the privilege of teaching thousands of students over the course of my career. Teaching is my vocation and I have experienced how education is at its best when it is a three-way partnership among the school, parents, and the student. Schools are the foundation of a community and I want Hartland Schools to be the best they can be.
