Parents should be a child’s primary educator, and schools should focus on teaching the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed after graduation. Education is truly a home-school collaboration and I want to increase that teamwork. One way is by bringing back designated days for school-wide parent-teacher conferences. Teachers and parents working together is best for the students!
Parents trust schools to keep kids safe, and schools must make safety a #1 priority. Hartland classrooms need more security measures such as the installation of floor locks to prevent easy entry into the classroom by armed intruders. Teachers should have resources (such as an app) to account for students in the event of an emergency. Students must also feel that they have privacy and safety in the bathroom. Girls' sports must be protected. I have already made an impact on the safety of Hartland High School (read about it in my blog post "Student Check-out Policy at HHS").
Curriculum should prepare students for responsible citizenship and parents should have opportunities to view curriculum and meet with teachers. Academic success should be acknowledged just as athletic achievement is--let's state GPAs and the names of our top performers! To help students decide their paths after graduation, Hartland needs to provide earlier and more frequent career exploration, with an emphasis on the trades.
The district must serve the community. Parents should have the opportunity to attend district-wide parent/teacher conferences and have ways to participate and support their children's school experience. Administration should respond thoughtfully to parents' concerns. I have talked with many Hartland parents who are looking to homeschool or have their kids attend private schools because they feel HCS is not meeting their needs. Hartland Consolidated Schools must be a viable option for parents when considering their children's education.
